Why the first bill isn't what you'll pay
The advertised price is only your first bill. Across the deals we track, the real monthly cost (everything you pay over the contract,
divided by its months) is a typical £4 a month higher than the first bill. Three things make the difference:
- Yearly price rises. 27 of 36 deals rise by a set amount each year, typically £4 a month.
Another 9 can rise without a stated amount. None has a fixed price for the whole contract.
- Setup fees. 11 of 36 deals charge one, typically £10. The rest are free to set up.
- Contract length. 24-month deals usually take two rises; 18-month and 12-month deals take fewer. That's why we compare the average
a month, not the total.

How to pay less
- Compare the real monthly cost, not the first bill. A low starting price with a big rise can cost more than a steadier deal.
- Look beyond the big names. Independent full fibre networks are often cheaper for the same speed. Altnets explained.
- Don't pay for speed you won't use. Up to 200Mb is plenty for most homes of one to three people.
- Switch when your contract ends. Out-of-contract prices are usually higher, and switching takes one call to your new provider. How to switch.
- Check cashback. Some deals pay cashback through Quidco or TopCashback, shown on each deal. It's paid months later, and only if it tracks.
- Ask about social tariffs. If you get Universal Credit or certain other benefits, social tariffs start from £16.50 a month.

What happens to the price when my contract ends?
Prices usually go up. Where providers publish an out-of-contract price, it's a typical £48.01 a month more than the deal's starting price. Ofcom requires providers to tell you before your contract ends, so it's worth comparing again then.
Is there cheaper broadband for people on benefits?
Yes. Most big providers have a social tariff for people on Universal Credit and some other benefits, from £16.50 a month on Ofcom's list. They usually have no exit fees and no mid-contract rises. Each provider page here lists its social tariff.
